Self-Improvement in Action at DAWCO: A Journey of Growth and Leadership

Yasmine: Charles-David, thank you for accepting this invitation for what promises to be an insightful interview full of challenges and learning moments. Could you tell us about your journey at DAWCO?

Charles-David: Of course. I joined DAWCO in September 2021 as a journeyman electrician on the REM-Grand Moulin project in Deux-Montagnes. At the time, I hadn’t anticipated progressing to a foreman role. Thanks to the guidance and trust of Jean-François Pellerin, our superintendent, I first took on a team leader position before being promoted to electrical foreman in April 2022. This quick progression allowed me to gain significant experience in management, planning, and communication.

Yasmine: That’s an impressive career trajectory! It shows that your potential and adaptability were recognized early on. The REM tunnel project toward YUL Airport is a major endeavor. What are the main challenges you’re currently facing?

Charles-David: The project has just started, and the biggest challenge is communication within the tunnel, as we don’t have cellular or internet access. Everything relies on walkie-talkies. Planning is critical to ensure team safety and meet deadlines. Currently, I’m assisting another foreman in managing a team of about 14 electricians in the tunnel before transitioning to the airport project.

Yasmine: That must be challenging, working in such an isolated environment. What do you enjoy most about your role as a foreman?

Charles-David: I love the planning and organization of tasks. Anticipating project phases, minimizing risks, and ensuring the team has everything they need to work efficiently and safely is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a great way to combine technical expertise with management.

Yasmine: It’s clear you genuinely enjoy paving the way for your team. It must be rewarding to see all that planning come to life on the site. How does your experience as an electrician help you supervise and inspire your team today?

Charles-David: I draw from my field experience to guide the team while being attentive to their needs. I prefer leading by example and sharing solutions based on my own experiences. I provide concrete examples to help avoid mistakes, but I also learn from them. It’s a mutual exchange.

Yasmine: That’s inspiring! This mutual exchange strengthens team cohesion and allows everyone to grow together. Can you share a memorable moment where you and your team overcame a challenge?

Charles-David: Sure! One of the standout moments was installing multi-service cable trays in a staircase at the REM stations. The biggest challenge was the extremely tight working space due to the security doors already in place, which complicated both maneuvers and safety measures.

To overcome this, we worked closely with the client to set up a secure scaffold, ensuring an optimal working environment. We also brought in a specialized machine to lift and position the cable trays precisely in the confined space. Each step required meticulous planning and flawless coordination.

It was a true team effort, with everyone playing a crucial role. Thanks to the commitment and collaboration of all involved, we successfully completed the installation without incidents, meeting project requirements. This moment makes me particularly proud, as it demonstrates our ability to tackle technical challenges while prioritizing team safety.

Yasmine: It’s evident that every detail was considered to ensure safety. It highlights the importance of preparation and teamwork in such situations. Congratulations to you and your team! You’ve likely participated in the “Know Your Colors” training. What are your colors, and how do they influence your management style?

Charles-David: My main colors are blue and red. Blue reflects my organized and thoughtful nature, while red represents my results-driven mindset. Over time, red has become more prominent due to my responsibilities, but I balance it with my green side to listen and motivate the team. Listening is essential to help everyone give their best.

Yasmine: It’s fascinating to see how your colors evolve with your role. Balancing organization, results, and listening is a real strength for a manager. Among the projects you’ve worked on at DAWCO, which one makes you the proudest and why?

Charles-David: I’m especially proud of the REM stations at Sainte-Dorothée and Grand-Moulin. Despite the technical and organizational challenges, we delivered these projects successfully thanks to a strong and motivated team. These were demanding projects that required extensive coordination.

Yasmine: That’s a remarkable collective achievement! These projects leave a lasting legacy and demonstrate the team’s ability to deliver despite challenges. Outside of work, how do you relax?

Charles-David: Outside of work, I’m a tech-savvy person. I’m passionate about technology and reading, especially on topics related to economics and technology. I also enjoy music. I’m a beginner piano player and have recently been practicing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Music helps me focus, escape, and unwind after a busy day at the REM.

In addition, I take on renovation projects, whether for my house or my father’s. It allows me to clear my mind, focus on something tangible, and find a sense of calm after long workdays.

Yasmine: That’s a wonderful balance of creativity, technicality, and relaxation! If you had to summarize your experience at DAWCO in one word, what would it be?

Charles-David: Without hesitation, teamwork. Without my colleagues and the cohesion within our teams, we wouldn’t accomplish as much. It’s truly the key to our success on such demanding projects.

Yasmine: That couldn’t be better said! Teamwork is at the heart of everything DAWCO achieves, and your journey is a great example of that. Thank you so much, Charles-David, for this inspiring conversation. Your story is a testament to determination, pushing boundaries, leadership, and team spirit. I’m sure your insights will resonate with many colleagues. Congratulations on your accomplishments, and best of luck with your upcoming projects!

Charles-David: Thank you, Yasmine. The pleasure is all mine.
