Strategic Alliance Boosts AP60 Aluminum Production Project

Strategic Alliance Boosts AP60 Aluminum Production Project

Jonquière

Patrick Goulet, Operations Manager, Naval & Eastern Quebec

The AP60 project, which will contribute to an annual production of approximately 160,000 metric tons of primary aluminum, represents an investment of $1.4 billion at Complexe de Jonquière. The new AP60 plant is scheduled to be operational by the first half of 2026.

After an ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) led by Jean-Luc Henry, Director of Estimating, and his team comprising Charles Mailloux, Senior Project Manager, Walid Bekkouche, Mechanical Estimator, Stéphane Boucher, Superintendent, Alain Ross, Senior Project Manager, Guillaume Douterluingne, VP, Operations and myself, DAWCO successfully finalized a collaborative contract with EBC. This project includes the installation and welding of the busbars, as well as the installation and welding of the tanks, electrical and mechanical work.

A big congratulations to all of you for your dedication, expertise, and outstanding teamwork. This achievement is a testament to your hard work and professionalism. Let's continue to build on this momentum.

During the course of this project, DAWCO established a strategic partnership with Sirois Électrique, a local contractor that has been active in industrial construction since 1965. This collaboration resulted in the formation of the Consortium DAWCO (Mandataire) Sirois, commonly referred to as CDS.

Welcome to CDS in the DAWCO family!

Consortium CDS

This project is led by a skilled team (Alain Ross, Project Manager, Stéphane Boucher, Mechanical Superintendent, Carl Savard, Electrical Superintendent and Mathieu Simard, Lead QA/QC). As Guillaume would so aptly put it: “the right team in the right place.”

DAWCO will need around 30 welders to carry out this contract. We have therefore organized, with the help of FIPOE, two training cohorts for welders specialized in aluminum. These training courses will take place right here in Chicoutimi.

The AP60 project is estimated at around 135,000 man-hours, and will mobilize a team of over 100 workers. Main activities include:

  • Installation of 74 tanks;
  • Welding of busbars;
  • Piping installation.

This large-scale project requires precise coordination and effective collaboration between the various teams to ensure its success.

In conclusion, despite its complexity, this mandate offers our team a unique chance to tackle exciting challenges. If it had been straightforward, this contract would likely have gone to a different team.
